Iran Urges UNESCO to Condemn Israel’s Threat to Historic Trans-Iranian Railway

Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage has formally appealed to UNESCO’s Director-General, calling on the UN agency to condemn Israel’s reported threat against the 1,394-km Trans-Iranian Railway. The railway, spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2021 for its scale and engineering feats. The minister described any attack as an assault on humanity’s shared heritage and urged UNESCO to take an immediate and clear stance to prevent military action, according to ISNA.

Absolutely, they must protect the railway's value without taking sides, promoting dialogue among all governments involved.

I find it interesting that Iran immediately turned to UNESCO for condemnation rather than seeking bilateral talks with Israel or other stakeholders first.

I doubt there's any real threat to the railway—dem dey blow am way out of proportion just to attract headlines.

Perhaps UNESCO could deploy an expert team to verify the situation on the ground and then issue a clear statement to guide next steps.
