Businessman Sentenced to 30 Years for Misappropriating $62,500 and €36,020

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced Olumuyiwa Teniola-Idowu to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of stealing $62,500 and €36,020, and failing to disclose assets. Justice Ismail Ijelu delivered the verdict following prosecution by the EFCC. The defendant faced six counts: four counts of stealing and two counts of non-disclosure of assets. He received concurrent five-year terms for theft and an additional five-year term on each non-disclosure count, with an option to pay a N1 million fine per count within six months. The court also ordered Teniola-Idowu to restitute the full amount of $62,500 and €36,020 to the complainant, Brouwers USA Trucks and Parts, within six months. The offences breached Section 285 of the Lagos State Criminal Law and Section 27(3) of the EFCC Act.

It's surprising that despite convicting him, the assets stolen are modest compared to other EFCC cases.

A 30-year term for roughly $100,000 seems excessive; perhaps a reduced sentence with asset recovery would serve justice better.
