Nigeria’s secondary education is sinking under the weight of profit-driven private schools. Many institutions now treat students as ATMs and teachers as disposable labour. Proprietors fire staff to protect revenue while overlooking indiscipline among fee-paying pupils. Experienced educators are quitting for better-paying work. Despite over 70% of schools being privately owned, literacy rates remain stagnant and exam malpractice keeps rising. Urgent reform is needed: stricter licensing, stronger teacher protection, and real accountability for school owners. Without this, our graduates will hold certificates but lack the skills and character to lead.
