Why I Oppose the State Police Bill: Threats to Democracy and Security
As a citizen committed to justice, I support security reforms but oppose the State Police Bill under our current political realities. My biggest concern is political abuse. Granting governors armed forces risks targeting opponents, silencing dissent, and undermining democratic freedoms. Nigeria’s security challenges demand unity and national coordination. Fragmenting policing powers without fixing corruption, poor funding, and weak oversight will deepen mistrust and disorder. We should focus on strengthening existing institutions. Improving community policing, boosting intelligence and technology, and enforcing accountability can protect all Nigerians without exposing us to new risks.
