Okpekpe 10km Race Appoints Nigeria’s First World Athletics-Certified Medical Director

Okpekpe 10km Race Appoints Nigeria’s First World Athletics-Certified Medical Director

Okpekpe International 10km Road Race will hold its 11th edition on May 30, 2026, in Edo State. Race director Zack Amodu says the event has named Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu as medical director to meet new World Athletics requirements. Ogbondeminu, who also serves as Medical Director at Nigeria’s National Institute for Sports, earned his World Athletics certification in Madrid last April. He is the first Nigerian doctor to hold this qualification. The National Institute for Sports Director-General supported his nomination, citing his work at the 2024 African Games and global experience. Since 2013, the Okpekpe Race has led West African road running, becoming the first regional event with a World Athletics label.

Naming a certified medical director sounds impressive, but meeting paperwork standards won't automatically improve on-the-ground emergency response.

We already have first aid stations struggling for equipment; adding a certified medical director won't solve all the gaps.

Organisers should publish clear emergency protocols and equipment lists so runners know exactly what medical support awaits at every checkpoint.
