Christian Council Warns FRSC Bill’s Bus Preaching Ban Threatens Religious Freedom
The Christian Council of Nigeria has appealed to President Tinubu and the National Assembly to review the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill 2026. It warns that the proposed ₦50,000 fine for preaching in commercial buses could infringe on constitutional freedoms and harm vulnerable Nigerians. While supporting genuine road safety measures, the council objects to placing evangelism alongside hawking and trading. It argues that commercial buses have long provided brief moments of hope, encouragement and prayer for willing passengers and that such peaceful religious expression deserves protection. The CCN also criticises the fine for hawkers, saying poverty and unemployment drive mobile trading. Instead of punitive sanctions, it calls for designated trading areas, sustainable economic empowerment programmes and wider public consultations with faith groups, transport unions and civil society. I worry that we often prioritise religion over common sense and the overall common good. Nigeria risks remaining stuck in a cycle of self-deceit while other nations move forward if we refuse practical reforms.
