Malaria Crisis: Nigeria Accounts for Nearly a Third of Global Deaths
Nigeria carries about a quarter of all malaria cases worldwide and over 30 percent of deaths. Nearly the entire population is at risk, making malaria a daily reality for millions. Poor drainage in cities and shifting rainfall in rural areas extend mosquito breeding seasons. Insecticide resistance and low ownership of treated nets have reversed earlier gains, especially among children and pregnant women. International funding has been cut sharply, delaying or cancelling more than 40 percent of planned net distributions for 2025. New vaccines and prevention projects exist but reach only some states. Experts warn that without stronger domestic funding, better water and sanitation, and deeper community outreach, Nigeria is unlikely to meet the 2030 goal of cutting malaria deaths by 90 percent.
