Kyari Blames Miscommunication Over Medical Trip for Senate Arrest Warrant

Kyari Blames Miscommunication Over Medical Trip for Senate Arrest Warrant

Mele Kyari has described the Senate Committee on Public Accounts’ decision to issue an arrest warrant against him as shocking. In a letter to the committee, he said he had informed them on May 11 that he was abroad for medical treatment and could not attend the June 10 hearing. Kyari denied evading the probe, stating he did not receive any fresh summons. He offered to answer urgent questions in writing through his lawyers and pledged to appear before the committee once he returns to Nigeria. He also defended his tenure at NNPCL, saying he transformed the company from loss-making to profitable. He insisted all transactions were documented and available for review. The warrant followed his absence from a committee session investigating over ₦210 trillion in NNPCL financial records. Senators Victor Umeh and Adams Oshiomhole moved and seconded the motion for the warrant.

Do you think miscommunication alone justifies an arrest warrant against someone who notified the committee they'd be abroad for medical treatment?

I agree miscommunication by itself isn't enough reason for an arrest warrant, especially after notifying the committee about a medical trip.

It's surprising the Senate Committee went ahead with an arrest warrant despite receiving written notice of his medical trip nearly a month before the hearing.

You can't just say it was all miscommunication without addressing why the committee ignored his letter and pursued legal action so quickly.

If the committee wants to avoid similar disputes, they should set up clear guidelines for medical absences and confirm notices with all members in writing.
