Why Is Honesty Punished in Nigerian Workplaces?

I recently had a frustrating experience at work that made me question workplace culture in Nigeria. I worked a night shift until 2 AM and slept before returning to open the office. I arrived 10 minutes late and was issued a query. When I explained the truth, I was scolded for “not even knowing how to lie.” I then faced a second query and was nearly suspended. Is honesty punished while clever lying is quietly rewarded? Is this how most Nigerian workplaces operate?

I've noticed many managers focus on punctuality records over the actual reasons behind lateness, which often seems counterproductive.

I get the need for rules, but abi this approach only discourages people from speaking up when issues arise at work.

Perhaps implementing a clear lateness policy with grace periods, plus honest feedback sessions, could balance accountability and trust among team members.
