Police Crack Down on N7.7 Billion Telecom Data Fraud, Recover N90m and Properties
The Nigeria Police Force’s Cybercrime Centre has dismantled a major telecom data fraud ring that exploited a service provider’s billing system to generate over N7.7 billion in illicit airtime. The operation, disclosed on June 18, 2026, led to the arrest of key suspects and the seizure of evidence including more than 400 laptops, 1,000 mobile phones, POS machines, and cash. Investigations showed insiders colluded with external accomplices between October and November 2024 to convert fake airtime into data bundles, distributing them through vendors nationwide. Security agents also traced and reversed nearly 2,932 TB of fraudulently obtained data worth about N3.8 billion. In a second wave of raids across Kano, Katsina and Zamfara in May 2026, officers arrested primary suspects and recovered almost N90 million, two residential houses, a mini-plaza and a Toyota RAV4 believed to be proceeds of the crime. Probes continue to identify other collaborators and assets.
