Zamfara Elders Freed After N35 Million Ransom Paid

Zamfara Elders Freed After N35 Million Ransom Paid

About 50 community elders kidnapped on their way to a peace meeting with bandits in Zamfara State have been released after weeks in captivity. Local sources report that a ransom of about N35 million was paid for their freedom. The victims came from Magamin Diddi community in Maradun Local Government Area. Three of the abducted elders died while held by the bandits. The elders had travelled in early June hoping to negotiate an end to attacks on their community. As of this report, the Zamfara State Government and security agencies have not officially confirmed the release or the reported ransom payment.

Paying N35 million seems like it might encourage more kidnappings rather than solve the underlying security failures in Zamfara communities.

While the elders are safe now, I question whether this ransom cycle won't just reward bandits and endanger other innocent villagers.

Local leaders should partner with security agencies to set up early warning systems and community patrols before entering high-risk areas.
