Chelsea’s European Hopes Dashed as 10-Man Blues Fall 2-1 at Sunderland

Chelsea’s European Hopes Dashed as 10-Man Blues Fall 2-1 at Sunderland — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Chelsea needed a win at the Stadium of Light to secure European football next season. Instead, Trai Hume broke the deadlock in the 24th minute and Malo Gusto’s own goal just after half-time put the Blues 2-0 down. Cole Palmer pulled one back early in the second half, but defender Wesley Fofana’s second yellow card six minutes later left Chelsea with ten men. Sunderland held firm to record a famous victory. The result means Chelsea finish 10th in the Premier League, missing out on Europe for a second successive season.

Calling this result a collapse seems harsh—Sunderland have proven hard to beat on their own turf.
