Audit Uncovers N139.8bn Missing from Benue Treasury (2015–2023)
A state inquiry examining Benue’s finances between May 2015 and May 2023 has revealed a N139.8 billion shortfall. The commission’s report, presented to Governor Hyacinth Alia, shows revenue of N826.5 billion against expenditure of N683.4 billion. The panel flagged questionable loan transactions involving local councils and financial institutions, repayments that exceeded original amounts without documentation, and irregular transfers to banks lacking proper records. It recommended recovering all unaccounted funds from those responsible. To prevent future gaps, the commission called for stronger financial controls, proper authorisation of online transactions by designated officers, and an end to blank pre-signed mandates. These measures aim to boost transparency and accountability in Benue’s public finance management.
