Edo Police Dismiss Five Officers Over Alleged Benin City Abduction and Extortion Ring
The Edo State Police Command has dismissed five officers, demoted an inspector and declared another officer a deserter over an alleged abduction and extortion syndicate operating in Benin City. Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem said the action followed intelligence-led investigations and public complaints of harassment, unlawful arrests, abduction and forced cash withdrawals. The suspects allegedly intercepted residents around the Teboga area off Aduwawa, forced them into commercial buses and compelled them to withdraw money through POS operators before release. The command said the syndicate included serving and dismissed officers, commercial drivers and civilian collaborators. More than 11 victims have reportedly identified members of the group. Five dismissed officers are to be prosecuted, while Inspector Ehubariemen Wisdom was reduced from inspector to sergeant for misconduct. Inspector Enahoro Nicholas of PMF Squadron 60 was declared a deserter after allegedly fleeing. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest him as more victims come forward.
