President Ruto Clarifies Remarks on Nigerians’ English Proficiency

President Ruto Clarifies Remarks on Nigerians’ English Proficiency

Kenya’s President William Ruto says his recent comments about Nigerians’ command of English were taken out of context. He made the original remarks last week while praising Kenya’s education standards at a public event in Italy. Many Nigerians criticised his statement online after he suggested that some listeners might need a translator to follow Nigerian English. On April 28, speaking at a mining conference in Nairobi, President Ruto insisted the exchange was meant as a private conversation and was misrepresented. He asked Nigerians to convey his regards to President Tinubu and described all Africans as speaking “very good English,” adding that accents vary across countries.
