FG Advises Nigerians in South Africa to Fund Their Own Repatriation Amid Rising Xenophobia
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that Nigerian citizens who opt to return from South Africa must bear their own travel expenses. Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the process is voluntary and self-funded. He explained that two groups have applied for repatriation: those who feel unsafe despite valid documents and those with visa or permit violations seeking government assistance to return. The ministry will only coordinate arrangements and will not provide transportation or an aircraft. This statement follows reports of xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa. The Foreign Affairs Minister has summoned the South African envoy to express Nigeria’s concern over attacks on its nationals.
