House Minority Warns Tinubu Against Prioritising 2027 Over Democracy and Security
The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has accused the federal government of ignoring urgent governance issues in favour of political manoeuvres for the 2027 elections. They raised alarm over growing insecurity and highlighted the recent death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted and died under unclear circumstances in Katsina State. They described his killing as a sign of a failed state’s inability to protect its citizens. The group also condemned the ongoing captivity of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State and urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts. Every hour in captivity, they warned, increases the danger to these victims. Opposition lawmakers criticised a federal court order to deregister five political parties, calling it an attempt to weaken democratic opposition ahead of the next elections. They called on President Tinubu to suspend election planning and implement a six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan.
