Temitope Adeshina Wins Historic Commonwealth Games High Jump Bronze for Nigeria
Temitope Adeshina won bronze in the women’s high jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Nigerian woman to win a medal in the event. Adeshina cleared 1.90 metres to finish behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers. Her podium finish ends Nigeria’s 72-year wait for a Commonwealth Games high-jump medal, following Emmanuel Ifeajuna’s gold in 1954. The bronze is a major milestone for Nigerian athletics and reflects Adeshina’s progress since finishing 10th at her first Commonwealth Games four years ago. Sports officials say her achievement could inspire more young Nigerian women to take up field events.
