Foundation Urges Creation of Dedicated Government Agency to Support Widows

Foundation Urges Creation of Dedicated Government Agency to Support Widows

The Oko Opo Widows Foundation has called on federal and state governments to set up a dedicated body or special unit to tackle the socio-economic challenges facing widows and their children. Ambassador Babatunde Adeyemo made the appeal in Abeokuta during events marking International Widows Day. He proposed a government-backed platform focused on economic empowerment, healthcare access, education, legal protection and social welfare. Adeyemo highlighted how many widows still face discrimination, poverty and neglect despite their contributions. Reviewing the foundation’s three-year work, he noted its financial support, medical outreach, educational grants and planned housing projects. He urged governments, businesses and Nigerians to partner in creating lasting structures that will protect widows and secure a brighter future for their dependants.

What specific support measures do you think a dedicated government agency for widows could prioritise to address both immediate and long-term socio-economic needs?

I agree, starting with quick cash relief and health coverage, paired with vocational training and business loans for lasting income.

It's interesting how this foundation is pushing for a new agency, but past initiatives often struggled with funding shortfalls and unclear mandates.

I get funding worries, but a focused agency might improve oversight and reduce those shortfalls over time.

Creating another government unit may just add layers of bureaucracy without guaranteeing better outcomes for widows and their children.

Perhaps partnering existing social welfare departments with local NGOs would deliver quicker assistance than setting up an entirely new arm of government.
