NCDC: Nigeria Only 59% Ready for Ebola, Land Borders Pose Biggest Risk
Nigeria’s health agency has assessed the country’s Ebola preparedness at just 59 per cent and warned that border crossings remain a major vulnerability. Recent evaluations highlighted weaknesses at airports and along unofficial land routes. States with international airports are deemed high risk, but extensive unmonitored land borders complicate disease surveillance. Drawing on lessons from the 2014 outbreak, officials stress the need for prompt case detection, isolation of suspects, effective contact tracing and rapid laboratory testing. They also emphasise strict infection prevention measures and adequate protective gear for health workers. The NCDC is deploying advisers to states, expanding laboratory networks and ramping up public awareness campaigns. Authorities call on state governments to strengthen local response systems and share responsibility for national health security.
