Losing My Husband After My Daughter’s Autism Diagnosis: A Journey of Resilience
When my daughter, Faizat, was diagnosed with autism at 11, relief and dread washed over me. For years, we had chased prayers and herbal remedies, unaware of what autism meant. Soon after her diagnosis, I lost my husband and became a widow caring for three children alone. Therapy, medication and specialist care were beyond our means. Public stares on buses, landlords accusing us of curses and neighbours demanding we leave turned daily life into a battle. I realised their pain came from ignorance, but giving up was never an option. Over the past 26 years, I’ve learned that communication goes beyond words and that love is showing up even when hope feels far away. Sharing our story has connected me with other parents and inspired strangers to support our family. Now I run the Faizat Hope Foundation for Autism and Special Needs to help families find answers sooner and fight stigma. Autism isn’t a curse or punishment—it’s a call for acceptance, understanding and community.
