Irish Musician and Once Star Glen Hansard Dies Aged 56

Irish singer-songwriter and actor Glen Hansard has died aged 56 following a motorcycle crash in the Strawberry Beds area on the outskirts of Dublin. Hansard was best known as the frontman of The Frames, a member of folk-rock duo The Swell Season, and the star of the 2007 musical drama Once. He and Markéta Irglová won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly,” which they co-wrote and performed. Born in Ballymun, Dublin, Hansard began busking as a teenager before building a career spanning music, film and charity work. He released acclaimed solo albums including Rhythm and Repose and Didn’t He Ramble, while also appearing in films such as The Commitments and Cyrano. He is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their child. His estimated net worth at the time of his death was reported to be $5 million.
