Tinubu Snubs Desmond Elliot’s Push for Fourth Term in Lagos Assembly
Reports say Desmond Elliot’s bid for a fourth term in Surulere 1 has stirred tension within Lagos APC. The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is said to back former special adviser Barakat Odunuga-Bakare as part of a push for greater gender inclusion. Elliot, however, is pressing ahead and plans to test his base at the upcoming APC primaries. Sources say envoys lobbied President Tinubu to intervene for Elliot, but he declined, insisting the party’s internal democracy should decide the outcome. He was quoted as saying that if those who carried Elliot for 12 years can no longer defend him, that speaks to his performance. Neither Elliot nor Gbajabiamila has publicly commented, and the presidency hasn’t confirmed Tinubu’s alleged remarks. The result of the Surulere primary will offer insight into shifting alliances in Lagos politics ahead of the next election.
