Villa Worker Confesses Role in 2025 Coup Plot Against President Tinubu
Zekeri Umoru, a maintenance employee at the Presidential Villa, admitted he was drawn into a 2025 plan to violently topple President Bola Tinubu. He told investigators that Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim of the Presidential Clinic introduced him to Colonel Mohammed “Ma’aji,” who offered him electrical work and paid him cash on several occasions. Umoru described receiving cash transfers and withdrawing N8.8 million from a Zenith Bank branch. He said he later became uneasy and pressed Ibrahim for details, only to learn the plot aimed to “sanitize the government” with the help of unnamed accomplices inside the Villa. He insisted he never knew of any concrete plan and apologised to his employers and the president’s administration. The court also previewed a separate video of Sheikh Imam Kassim Goni, an Islamic cleric accused of receiving funds from Colonel Ma’aji for prayers and charity. Goni denied involvement in the coup, but investigators pointed out discrepancies in his financial records dating back to early 2023. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the trial to May 11–13 to allow defence counsel time to review the latest video evidence.
