Kogi Leads with 53% Food Inflation as Prices Surge Nationwide
New data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows Nigeria’s headline food inflation rose to 17.52% year-on-year in June 2026. However, Kogi State topped the chart with a staggering 53.02% increase, followed by Niger at 43.83% and Benue at 40.83%. The jump reflects rising costs for staples like crayfish, fresh pepper, tomatoes, yam flour and cassava products. On a month-on-month basis, national food inflation climbed by 0.77 percentage points to 3.75% in June. Despite easing compared to mid-2025, regional disparities remain stark. While Kogi and Niger saw the sharpest annual increases, Katsina, Rivers and Imo recorded the slowest food price growth. Borno, Bayelsa and Benue even logged monthly declines. The uneven pressures threaten household budgets and food security in key farming states, underscoring the challenge of stabilising prices across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
