Cameroon’s Succession Questions Deepen as Paul Biya’s Absence Reaches 48 Days
Cameroon is facing renewed uncertainty over succession as President Paul Biya remains outside the country 48 days after leaving for what officials described as a short private stay in Europe. Biya, 93, has ruled for more than four decades and is reported to be in Switzerland with his wife, Chantal. Opposition figures say his prolonged absence has created an institutional vacuum, while the government insists he is still directing state affairs through his aides. Officials have also denied reports that he was admitted to a clinic in Geneva. The uncertainty is heightened by the absence of an appointed vice-president, despite the creation of the office through a constitutional amendment in May. If a presidential vacancy arises, Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye would be next in line to take charge pending a new election. Biya's absence follows disputed elections, delayed cabinet changes and repeated postponements of municipal and legislative polls, deepening concerns about political stability in Cameroon.
