Unlock Free Skills Training with Nigeria’s TVET Initiative

Unlock Free Skills Training with Nigeria’s TVET Initiative

The TVET Initiative is a flagship program of the Federal Ministry of Education. It equips young Nigerians with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship. Through partnerships with certified centers nationwide, the program offers tuition-free training, monthly stipends, hands-on instruction and post-training support. Participants also receive recognized certification, starter-kit grants and access to low-interest business loans. Two streams are available. The Short-Term Certificate (STC) runs for six months and requires a valid NIN and BVN. The Vocational Education & Innovation (VEI) lasts one year and accepts First School Leaving Certificates, non-formal education certificates or proof of prior learning. To apply, register on the official TVET portal, choose your stream, complete your profile, upload documents and select your preferred center and trade. Successful candidates will receive confirmation via email.

It sounds promising, but I wonder if the monthly stipend is enough to cover transport and living costs in larger cities.

While tuition is free, this could limit resources at some centers, potentially affecting the consistency of training quality across regions.

To make the most of this opportunity, pair the hands-on training with online tutorials and local mentorship for better skills retention.
