British Passenger Detained in Milan Bar for Breaching Hantavirus Quarantine
A British man in his 60s was detained in a Milan bar while under mandatory quarantine for potential hantavirus exposure aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. He and his travelling companion were ordered to isolate until June 6. Both were transferred to Sacco Hospital for further monitoring and care. The outbreak has 11 linked cases with nine confirmed and three fatalities. The strain, believed to be the Andes hantavirus, can spread between people and carries a mortality rate of up to 50 percent. World Health Organization and European health officials say there is no sign of a pandemic. There is currently no vaccine, so experts urge vigilance without panic.
