COOU May Shut Urban Planning Department Over Low Student Enrolment
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) says it may consider closing its Urban and Regional Planning Department because of persistently low student enrolment. The university is seeking support from the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) to promote the course in secondary schools across Anambra State. The Vice-Chancellor said the department has too few students despite having an approved admission quota and adequate support for accreditation. She urged prospective students who miss out on their first-choice courses to consider Urban and Regional Planning. NITP Anambra announced an annual ₦25,000 award and certificate for the department’s best graduating student. The institute also linked poor enrolment partly to Geography being required for admission, noting that the profession is reviewing the curriculum to allow alternative subjects. The institute pledged to support the department through career advocacy, mentoring, workshops, industrial exposure and research collaboration.
