Operation Wetie Began in Ibadan – Makinde Warns Against One-Party Domination
Governor Seyi Makinde warned against moves to sideline opposition at the national summit of All Opposition Political Party Leaders in Ibadan. He recalled “Operation Wetie”, the mid-1960s political violence that erupted in this city after disputed elections. Makinde cautioned that efforts to consolidate legislative control under one party and the internal crises haunting opposition ranks threaten Nigeria’s democracy. He urged leaders to stay active and preserve credible alternatives for citizens. “Democracy is weakened step by step until people feel it no longer works,” he said. He stressed that real choice depends on a strong, effective opposition alongside any ruling party.
