Cleric Draws Backlash Over Video Calling for Violence Against Non-Muslims
Yoruba-speaking Islamic cleric Shafiy Adeba has drawn backlash over a video in which he allegedly called for violence and enslavement of non-Muslims, whom he described as “kafir.” The video was shared on his TikTok page on Sunday. Speaking mainly in Yoruba, Adeba claimed that Muslims had a religious right to fight, restrict and enslave non-Muslims. His remarks have sparked concern because they advocate hostility toward people on the basis of religion. The report also referenced comments by Kano-based cleric Sheikh Yahya Jingir, who urged support for Muslim-Muslim political tickets at an event attended by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The two incidents have renewed debate about religious rhetoric and political mobilisation in Nigeria.
