Hon. Emma Okah Appeals to Gov Sanwo-Olu to Rescue First Consultants Medical Centre

Hon. Emma Okah Appeals to Gov Sanwo-Olu to Rescue First Consultants Medical Centre — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I write with deep concern for First Consultants Medical Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos. This hospital is sacred ground in Nigeria’s fight against pandemics. It was here that Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh courageously contained the Ebola virus, sacrificing her life to protect the nation. The COVID-19 pandemic further drained its resources and claimed more heroic staff. Today, this once-celebrated centre of excellence is a shadow of its former self. As someone whose triplets were born there, I know its value. I appeal to Your Excellency for urgent intervention—whether through strategic funding, a public–private partnership, or support from state and federal health agencies—to preserve our medical heritage and honour those who gave their lives for Nigeria.

Which single focus would pay off more: upgrading lab capacity or boosting staff training at First Consultants?

It's striking that federal attention goes to past heroism, but I'm not convinced the current administration has sustainable funding plans for the hospital.

Heroism at that hospital is undeniable, but focusing solely on Ikoyi risks neglecting other centres that deserve similar support.

To ensure First Consultants Medical Centre thrives, stakeholders should outline transparent budget allocations and community partnerships before any rescue funds are released.
