Mary Remmy Njoku: Many African Women Carry Family Burdens Without Recognition
Actress and businesswoman Mary Remmy Njoku has challenged the belief that women do not understand the pressure of providing for others. She recalled telling a male colleague that she understood the burden of earning money, building a business and supporting dependants. He disagreed, saying women could not understand that kind of pressure. She said she chose not to argue and simply paid him for the project. Njoku noted that many African women support parents, raise siblings, pay school fees and care for relatives, often long before marriage or motherhood. She urged women carrying such responsibilities to recognise the value of their work and sacrifices.
