Ayatollah Khamenei’s Funeral Set for June After Four-Month Delay
Nearly four months after his assassination in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest beside the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. This fulfills his final wish to rest beside one of Shia Islam’s most revered figures. State media and the IRGC say the main ceremony will begin around June 21 in Tehran, with public viewings and farewells spread over three days. Officials anticipate up to 20 million mourners converging on Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, making it one of the largest gatherings in modern history. Following at least 24 hours of ceremony in Tehran, processions will travel through the holy city of Qom before reaching Mashhad for the burial. If attendance matches expectations, it could rival or surpass the record set at Ayatollah Khomeini’s funeral in 1989.
