Kano Man Jailed for 8 Years After Hiding Cannabis in Bread at High Court

A 23-year-old man, Kabiru Adamu, has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for smuggling cannabis concealed inside a loaf of bread into the Kano High Court premises. He was arrested on January 14, 2026 when correctional service officers found the drugs hidden in the loaf intended for a defendant known locally as “Wizzy.” The exhibit and suspect were handed over to the NDLEA’s Kano Strategic Command for prosecution. Following investigation, Kabiru Adamu was convicted by Justice S.M. Shuaibu on April 22, 2026, receiving a jail term without the option of a fine. NDLEA Commander D.Y. Lawal praised the verdict as a firm deterrent to those who attempt to smuggle illegal substances into court environments. Commander Lawal also thanked NDLEA leadership for ongoing support and urged the public to report any drug-related activities to help achieve a drug-free Nigeria.

I'm not convinced this loaf of bread really posed a serious threat—was the lengthy sentence justified here?
