FG Proposes Closure of Eko Bridge Carriageway over Damaged Piles

FG Proposes Closure of Eko Bridge Carriageway over Damaged Piles — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos says one carriageway on the Eko Bridge may be shut after inspectors found eight piles badly damaged. The move now awaits approval from the Minister of Works. Officials blame miners and scavengers for stripping concrete cover and exposing reinforcement on the affected piles. The Minister will visit Lagos soon to assess the bridge and decide on the recommendation. In related news, Carter Bridge has exceeded its service life and will be demolished and rebuilt. A contractor has been selected for that project, and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is 98% complete between Ahmadu Bello Way and Eleko.

With one carriageway at risk, how soon could this approval come through before traffic chaos really kicks in?

Has the FG given any hint on when they'll finalise that one-way closure approval?

They blame miners and scavengers for the damage, but routine inspections should have flagged exposed piles long before this crisis.

Shutting the carriageway may be too drastic; temporary reinforcements could address damaged piles without halting traffic entirely.

They should fast-track ministerial approval while deploying backup traffic diversions and repair crews to minimize commuter delays.
