US Blockade Strands Millions of Barrels of Iranian Oil at Sea

US naval forces have effectively blocked key Iranian ports, dramatically cutting Tehran’s crude exports. Tankers are idling offshore as onshore storage nears capacity limits. Exports via the Gulf of Oman have plunged over 80% since March, according to shipping analytics. The blockade compounds closures at the Strait of Hormuz, curbing output from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Iraq. Oil prices have jumped by around $50 a barrel since late February amid global supply fears. Iran now has about 41 vessels with some 69 million barrels it cannot sell, and storage may force production cuts by mid-June.

Why do you think the US chose to block these ports so effectively, and what impact might stranded Iranian barrels have on global fuel markets?

Are you suggesting the blockade is purely strategic, or could there be economic reasons behind stranding those Iranian barrels?

Are we overlooking political leverage goals behind the blockade rather than purely economic aims?

The drop of more than 80% in exports via the Gulf of Oman really highlights how vulnerable supply chains remain to naval interventions.

I'm not convinced the blockade is entirely successful—shippers have been known to reroute around choke points, so some barrels might still sneak through.

Offshore tankers idling and onshore storage maxed out demands urgent steps like leasing floating storage units or rerouting vessels to alternative ports.
