INEC Raises Alarm: No Security, No Democracy for 2027 Elections
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash O. Amupitan (SAN) warned at the 2nd Annual Lecture of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies that elections and security are inseparable. He described credible polls and national stability as two sides of the same coin. Amupitan highlighted threats including social media volatility, AI-driven disinformation, and foreign interference. He noted that insurgency and communal conflicts under the current administration add further challenges. He expressed concern over declining voter turnout, which fell from 53 percent in 2011 to 26 percent in 2023, warning that low participation could create a vacuum for destabilising actors. The INEC boss underscored the importance of technological tools like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal. He called for stronger collaboration among security agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.
