FG to Commission 15km Enugu–Onitsha Expressway Before Easter

FG to Commission 15km Enugu–Onitsha Expressway Before Easter

The federal government will open a newly completed 15-kilometre section of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway to traffic before Easter. Works Minister David Umahi made the announcement during an inspection tour in Enugu, part of a nationwide review of road projects ahead of May 29. Umahi noted that the current administration inherited over ₦13 trillion in debts and more than 2,000 unfinished projects. Despite financial liabilities, he said the government remains committed to delivering quality infrastructure across all regions without discrimination. He described the Enugu–Onitsha corridor as a strategic route in the South-East and pledged that complaints about bad roads will soon be history. The minister also revealed plans to redesign half of the 214 km Enugu–Port Harcourt highway with concrete pavement. Umahi acknowledged funding delays and thanked the state government for fast-tracking compensation and utility relocations. He assured Nigerians that payments to contractors would accelerate work and boost economic activities in the region.

Definitely, opening that stretch before Easter will cut travel time and ease traffic headaches for daily commuters.

I see the optimism, but traffic reduction might not be so big if other bottlenecks stay unchanged.

We've seen many road promises delayed before holidays; this initiative might face similar hold-ups.

Completing on time won't matter without proper safety measures and clear signage already in place.

Local transport unions should coordinate schedules now to avoid last-minute chaos when the Enugu–Onitsha expressway opens.
