NARD Condemns Violent Attack on Emergency Doctors at UCH Ibadan
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has denounced the assault on medical staff at the Emergency Department of University College Hospital, Ibadan. The incident occurred after the death of a patient on May 15, when a relative of the deceased reportedly attacked doctors, nurses, security personnel and other officers on duty. According to the association, the attacker physically assaulted Dr. Oladapo Olatunbosun and Dr. Mololuwa Adebayo, stripped some staff during the chaos, and disrupted emergency care even after being apprehended. The group described the violence as barbaric and a direct threat to Nigeria’s healthcare delivery. NARD praised the hospital’s resident doctors and management for swiftly responding and securing the suspect. It urged the Nigeria Police Force and relevant agencies to prosecute all involved and warned that informal settlements must be avoided. Expressing solidarity with the Ibadan doctors, the association called on federal authorities to strengthen security measures, enforce tougher penalties for attacks on healthcare workers, and prevent a repeat of such incidents.
