Tinubu Wary of Southern APC Rift Ahead of National Assembly Primaries
With two weeks to the APC straw polls, President Tinubu is uneasy over infighting among southern leaders competing for top roles in the next National Assembly. The party’s National Working Committee has waived his screening for the primaries, citing his prior clearance in 2022. Meanwhile, senators moved to amend Senate rules, setting up a clash with the presidency’s plan to manage floor functionary appointments. In a private meeting with the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Tinubu urged second-term governors to contest senatorial seats and oversee fair primaries. He’s also considering a Christian deputy from the North-West, even as top politicians from that zone vie for the Senate presidency. Separately, the African Democratic Congress criticised the federal government’s celebration of GDP growth as out of touch with citizens facing hunger, inflation and joblessness.
