Victor Boniface Nets Late Winner as Leverkusen Beat Newcastle 2-1

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface scored an 82nd-minute winner as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Newcastle United 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at St. James' Park. Ibrahim Maza gave Leverkusen a first-minute lead with a long-range effort before Malick Thiaw equalised for Newcastle shortly before half-time. Boniface settled the contest late on with a superb strike. The goal is an encouraging sign for the 25-year-old after an injury-disrupted 2025/26 season and a loan spell at Werder Bremen. He will hope to carry this form into Leverkusen's Bundesliga campaign, which begins next weekend.

Boniface getting an 82nd-minute winner is encouraging. How much confidence can a finish like that carry into the new season?

Do you think the bigger boost is for Boniface personally, or for the whole Leverkusen squad?

Leverkusen recovered well after Newcastle's equaliser, and Boniface deciding it late makes the friendly feel more memorable.

A late winner is nice, but it is still pre-season, so the result alone should not be treated as a major statement.

The useful takeaway is the attacking contribution: early lead, response after the equaliser, then a decisive late finish.
