Army Chief Pledges to Thwart Foreign Jihadist Infiltration at Nigeria’s Borders
At the grand finale of Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 in Port Harcourt, Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu revealed that foreign jihadist footprints have been detected along Nigeria’s borders. He assured citizens that the Army is alert and equipped to confront this threat decisively. Highlighting recent attacks by JNIM in Niger and infiltration attempts by ISWAP, Gen Shaibu recalled the Army’s history of overcoming major conflicts. He stressed that over 80% of troops are currently engaged in operations across the country and reaffirmed commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Bola Tinubu pledged to modernise the Army through emerging technologies, enhanced military capacity and local defence production. He emphasised revitalising the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria and fostering partnerships to boost homegrown innovation and combat readiness. The President commended officers and soldiers for their discipline and sacrifice, calling on them to uphold the uniform’s honour by protecting the weak and preserving citizens’ dignity. He said a secure and prosperous Nigeria depends on their unity and dedication.
