Deepfake Fraud Bust: Ghana Arrests Five Nigerians Among 11 for Impersonating President Mahama
Ghana’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team arrested 11 suspects, including five Nigerians, over an AI deepfake scheme impersonating President John Dramani Mahama. Between May 1 and 4, coordinated raids in the Volta Region led to the detention of two groups. The first included five Ghanaians, and the second comprised five Nigerians and one Ghanaian. Authorities seized laptops, phones, routers, 120 pre-registered SIM cards and a Nigeria-registered Mercedes-Benz. Investigators say the network used fake video content to solicit money and personal data online. Nine suspects remain in custody until May 25, while two minors were granted bail.
