Nigeria's Religious Piety Fails to Stem Moral Decline, Theologian Warns
Professor Kunle Macaulay warns that despite over 80% of Nigerians professing belief in God and regularly attending worship, the country is facing a deep moral and spiritual decline. A report from the Bible Research Institute finds that religious practice has not translated into consistent obedience to the moral teachings of the Bible or Quran. Macaulay laments that Nigeria’s inner strength has not matched its natural wealth, resulting in widespread ethical failures. He points to abuse of power, hypocrisy, insecurity, kidnapping, single parenthood, and political dysfunction as evidence of a departure from the founding fathers’ vision of a just, peaceful, and humane nation. He criticizes political and religious leaders for failing to uphold moral integrity and warns against claims of divine endorsement in politics. He calls on Nigerians to demand honesty and accountability from all leaders and urges a renewed ethical awakening across the country.
