Sultan of Sokoto Calls on Northern Leaders to Unite Against Banditry and Terrorism

The Sultan of Sokoto urged northern leaders and stakeholders to join forces against banditry, terrorism and kidnapping. He said security cannot be left to government agencies alone. Speaking at a meeting of northern traditional rulers and governors in Kaduna, he highlighted the new Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund. The board of trustees brings together respected figures from all 19 northern states to find lasting solutions. The monarch promised full support from traditional institutions. “We know the people and where we live,” he said, offering free consultation at any time. He stressed that unity across religious and ethnic lines is the region’s greatest strength. He recalled that traditional rulers have opposed violent extremism since 2014. He urged governors to provide sustained funding for the trust fund, noting that no intervention can succeed without adequate resources.

Agree. Communities can organise town assemblies, report threats promptly, and support local security initiatives.

It's interesting that the Sultan emphasizes collective effort, yet previous gatherings saw little follow-through from some governors.

While unity sounds promising, relying on traditional rulers alone might overlook the need for proper training and resources.

Communities could form watch committees led by local leaders to monitor suspicious activity and relay information promptly to security agencies.
