Anambra Residents Protest as TCN Marks Over 1,000 Nnobi Homes for Demolition
Residents of Nnobi in Idemili South LGA, Anambra State, protested on Monday over plans by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to demolish more than 1,000 homes for a high-tension power line. The affected residents, mainly from seven villages in the Ebenesi quarter, said they were given about 14 days to leave their homes. They appealed to the Federal Government and Anambra State authorities to intervene, provide alternative housing or reroute the line underground. Community leaders said many of the buildings are ancestral homes and that the dispute with TCN has lasted about 14 years. They added that the matter is already before a court. The protest became tense after a reported comment by an aide to Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Security operatives intervened and evacuated the aide after a heated exchange with protesters.
