The route is expected to give trucks, tankers and container vehicles an alternative to the congested Lekki-Epe Expressway. The project is becoming more important as the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Deep Sea Port and Lekki Free Trade Zone expand. Its supporters say it could help prevent cargo traffic in the Lekki corridor from reaching Apapa-level gridlock.
