First FIFA-Certified Pitch in Nigeria Puts Remo Stars Stadium on the Global Map

First FIFA-Certified Pitch in Nigeria Puts Remo Stars Stadium on the Global Map

Remo Stars General Secretary Michael Onikute says hosting international fixtures has thrust their 5,000-seat stadium into the global spotlight. Opened in 2020, the venue underwent major upgrades, including a hybrid synthetic pitch. In 2026, it became the first football field in Nigeria to earn FIFA Quality Certification after rigorous testing. The ground not only hosts club matches but also Nigeria’s junior national sides. It will stage the first leg of the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier between the Falconets and Malawi. Onikute stresses that quality facilities boost talent development and draw crowds, even in smaller venues. He calls for private investment and supportive policies to expand sports infrastructure across the country.

Not sure one fancy pitch will change much. Local talent still needs proper coaching and equipment everywhere.

Despite FIFA certification, a 5,000-seat capacity still seems modest compared to major venues and might struggle with larger international crowds.

Upgrading to a hybrid synthetic pitch sounds impressive, but it feels more like a branding move than genuine commitment to grassroots development.

Local clubs should study Remo Stars' model: invest in pitch quality and stadium facilities to attract international fixtures and boost revenue streams.
