Court Jails X User Two Years for Cyberbullying Adekunle Gold’s Family
This week, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Adeboye Samuel Adeyeye, known online as @Swanky00, to two years in prison for cyberbullying superstar Adekunle Gold and his family. He pleaded guilty to three counts of cyberbullying, cyberthreats and cyberharassment under the Cybercrimes Act. The court heard that Adeyeye posted a false announcement claiming the death of Adekunle Gold’s daughter and ran a months-long campaign of defamatory attacks on the musician and his wife. Evidence showed he monetised his X account to profit from the false content. In passing sentence, the judge considered his first-time offender status, apology letters from his parents, his health and his prompt admission of guilt. The two-year jail terms will run concurrently, with an option to pay a ₦1,000,000 fine instead, and a restraining order on any future harmful conduct. Legal experts and social media users say this landmark conviction sends a clear message: malicious falsehoods online now carry real consequences and Nigerians must think twice before sharing harmful content.
